CradlePoint has announced 3 new products. 2 of these products are 5G Ready/Capable. They are the E300 and the E3000. The 3rd router series is the E100. This router is designed for SOHO use, i.e., remote workers.
CradlePoint introduced a model of the existing IBR900 into the IoT Market Segment. They also introduced a model of the existing IBR600C into the Branch Market Segment (SOHO).
If you are interested in one of the 5G products or how CradlePoint is implementing its 5G solution, or if you are interested in purchasing an IBR900, click on the 'Product Announcements' button below for more information. There is significant pricing information on the IBR900 router packages.
CradlePoint has transistioned to a Software as a Service (SaaS) business model. As a result of this transition, CradlePoint has changed the way it provides firmware. Modem firmware is still able to be upgraded from the GUI interface. It is not recommended that you try to use the 'Remote Connect' feature in NCM to perform a modem firmware upgrade as the modem will power off in the middle and leave you in a mess. In order to get out of the mess, you will need to connect to the unit via an Ethernet connection or WiFi connection. This will require that the technician and the router be in the same location. It is recommended to use the 'Network Interfaces', 'Manage Modem Firmware' to upgrade the modem firmware.
The important information is that one is still able to upgrade Modem Firmware without access to NCM if necessary.
The 1200M-B modem is also know as the Cat18 Modem. The 1200M-B modem is available for Verizon, ATT, Sprint, T-Mobile and North American Generic carriers. The 1200M-B is also certified for Private LTE in that it supports CBRS and the licensed and unlicensed bands. Click here for a short video that provides an introduction to Private LTE.
With 4 antennas, the Gigabit Class Modems can download a theoretical maximum of 1.2 Gbps and a theoretical upload of 150 Mbps. In reality, the increase in speed is in the range of 2 to 6 times faster.
With 2 antennas (IBR900), the 1200M-B modem is capable of a theoretical download of 1 Gbps and a theoretical upload of 150 Mbps.
The increase in speed and the reduction in latency is a result of 3 technologies:
Access to Private LTE provides alternates to WiFi connections when there is too much congestion or the physical range is too large. It is great for Airports, Hospitals, Warehouses, etc. i.e., anywhere you need secure/private/reliable/cost effective transmission.
The 600M Modem Firmware is currently available for all 4 North American Carriers:
The 600M can download a theoretical maximum of 600 Mbps and a theoretical upload of 75 Mbps.
The 150M Modem is available in the IBR6x0C routers and the CBA550 router. It is FirstNet Ready in that it handles priority, preemption and is available for ATT Band 14. It is available for:
The 10M Modem is available for the following carriers:
This modem is available for the IBR200 Series. Modem firmware cannot be changed. Low cost data plans may be available for this modem.
The LP6 Modem Firmware is available for all 4 North American Carriers:
CradlePoint has transitioned to a Software as a Service (SaaS) business model. As a result of this transition, it has changed the way it provides firmware. The last version of firmware available on the Partner Portal and probably the Customer Portal is 7.0.70. Router firmware upgrades are only available through NCM. This is, by far, the easiest way to upgrade NCOS. And now, it is the only way to upgrade NCOS. With NetCloud Manager, you can schedule the NetCloud OS upgrade for a time which has the least impact on your business. The firmware upgrade screen is only available under the 'Group' category, as all routers within a group must have the same firmware release.
It is important to keep your router at the latest firmware, both router and modem, as it ensures your router is operating with all of the latest bug fixes as well as maintaining PCI compliance.
The other change made to the firmware policy is that NCOS versions older than 18 months will not be supported as of 12/31/2019. CradlePoint devices running NCOS versions older than 18 months will no longer be manageable or supported. The only action allowed for that device is to move it into a group with a supported version of NCOS. So, bottom line, is it is critical to get you firmware upgraded to at least version 6.6.0 by January 1, 2020.
In order to be able to get the Router Firmware, the router must have a current/active NCM plan.
CradlePoint has announced several new products. They have released 2 routers which they are referring to as 'Enterprise' routers. These routers are part of the Branch Market segment. They are the E300 and the E3000.
These router series are 5G ready. The E300 is a lower end device which can be purchased with either a Cat 4 Modem (150Mbps down/50Mbps up) or a Cat 18 Modem (1.2Gbps down/150Mbps up). This unit is an AER1600 series router on steroids. It is much more powerful than the AER1600. The E3000 is the 1st router that is designed from the bottom up for 5G transmission in mind. Both of these units used 'captive modems', which will be described below.
The 3rd router series is the E100. This router is designed for SOHO use, i.e., remote workers. It is a low end product with less throughput that the E300. It is available with a Cat 4 Modem (150Mbps down/50Mbps up). This device is not available for 5G transmission.
Captive Modem is the ability to connect a Cradlepoint 5G or 4G LTE adapter to a Cradlepoint router and manage them from NetCloud Manager as a single entity. The 5G or 4G LTE Adapter appears as an external modem in the connected Cradlepoint.
Captive Modem is composed of 2 coponents, the router/controller and the captive modem.
Supported Controllers:
Supported Captive Modems:
The 5G Adapters are not currently available in the United States.

CradlePoint solutions for FirstNet and Private LTE are still featured products in the CradlePoint product offerings. These sections have been left here for historical purposes. However, the focus of the CradlePoint product line is now the 5G implementation.
The new E300 and the E3000 are CradlePoint's offerings for the 5G market. The E3000 is the unit which has been designed from the bottom up for optimized 5G service. The E3000 is capable of handling 4G LTE transmission via the embedded Cat 18 modem. For 5G transmission, the unit is designed to use a 5G adapter which functions as an external modem in the E3000. The 5G adapter comes in 2 models, the W2000 for inside use and the W2005 for outside use. Click here for spec sheets on the 5G adapters. The 3000 is also designed to embed a future generation modular 5G modem. The unit has WiFi 6 which is good for use in congested areas. WiFi 6 is backward compatible for all of you existing WiFi devices. There are 9 Gigabit ports, 1 2.5 Gigabit port and 1 10 Gbe SFP+ port. All ports are LAN/WAN switchable. The unit also has 4 POE ports with a power budget of 140W. Each port is capable of handling a 90W device. However, the power budget cannot exceed 140W. This unit is truly the top-of-line model designed for 5G transmission and upward compatibility.
ATT is continuing to build out FirstNet. Band 14 is available in some areas. Where Band 14 is not available, ATT is using the presence of a 'FirstNet' SIM to give priority and preemption using the existing ATT Bands.
With the introduction of the Cat18 Modem, CradlePoint finally has a viable solution for First Responders. The 1200M-B supports Verizon, ATT, T-Mobile, Sprint and all North American Generic Carriers.
One cannot just get a First Net Data Plan/SIM, the person/organization must be qualified before receiving the plan. In order to use Band 14, you must have a FirstNet SIM and a FirstNet modem. FirstNet has established 2 levels of priority for FirstNet users, Primary Users and Extended Community Users. The Primary users are for First Responders i.e., Fire, Police, EMS Services. The Extended community Users are lower than Primary users. These are the organizations who assist the First Responders, such as essential government services, education, transportation and utilities.
Verizon has a competing offering. It uses Band 13, which is currently available nationwide. Verizon's solution uses software priority routing at the tower. Of course you need a Qualified First Responder SIM.
Visit www.firstnet.gov for information on the FirstNet project.
Information on how to qualify for all carriers is available at https://www.dhs.gov/requesting-wps.
Verizon's solution relies on priority and preemption. Any user with a higher priority will preempt any lower priority users and get access to the tower.
The 1200M-B is certified for Private LTE usage. Private LTE provides an alternative for users of WiFi transmission where the frequency is too congested or the physical area is too large for the WiFi range. Private LTE allows one to set up an LTE network equivalent to the Public LTE network. Access to the Private LTE is controlled by SIM. So, Private LTEs are secure, reliable, and private. Click here for a video introducing Private LTE.

* The LP6 models of the 16x0 series do not have the capability of adding a 2nd modem. These models do not have an embedded modem and use an MC400LP6 modem in the slot that would normally accommodate a 2nd modem.
** Dual SIMs do not allow you to connect simultaneously. It is not the same as 2 modems. Here is what dual SIMs allow you to do. You can have SIMs of different carriers or the same carrier. In both cases, if the primary connection fails, the unit can be configured to failover to the secondary connection. You can also use Dual SIMs to prevent data overage charges. This requires 2 SIMs with different data plans associated with each SIM, preferably for the same carrier. The primary interface can be configured to monitor data usage. Once the configured maximum data usage is reached, the primary interface will be deactivated and the configured secondary interface will take over. Failover to a different carrier is not immediate. It can take in the range of 7 minutes or more. In order to failover to a different carrier, the unit must load modem firmware for the second carrier into the modem, and then re-establish a network connection.
The two enterprise routers, E300 and E3000, are 5G ready. Of the two, the 3000 is the higher end. It is 5G optimized. The 300 is the lower end and is comparable to the discontinued AER1600 router, but it is much more powerful. The E100 is a SOHO unit, i.e. small office/home office. It is designed for mission critical employees to work from home.
Each of the AER models and the Enterprise models can be equipped with 2 Modems. They can be equipped for modems of the same carrier, different carriers, and combinations of LTE Advanced Pro (1200M-B), or LTE-Advanced (LP6). There is no MC400-600M modem. The 600M exists only as a integrated modem.
The CBA850 and the CBA550 can be used as an external modem in the CradlePoint 'Captive Modem' feature. The Captive modem uses 2 CradlePoint routers and treats them as 1. One of the routers is the 'controller'. The other router is the 'exteral modem' There are 2 uses for this feature. The 1st usage is to provide a modem for a router which does not have a modem, such as the 4250 or to allow the modem to be separate from the router for improved reception. The external modem can be placed in a location where there is good reception, while the controller router can be installed in a wiring closet. The 2nd use for the Captive Modem is for 5G. CradlePoint has 5G adapters which will function as the 'external modem'. This technology is not yet available in the United States as it is being tested in Australia by Telstra.
The CBA850 Models are available with a Cat 18(1200M-B) modem or a Cat 6 (LP6) modem. Both the 1200M-B modem and the LP6 modem are available for Verizon, ATT, T-Mobile and Sprint. The 1200M-B modem is 'FirstNet Ready'. Both modems have carrier sensing. The modem senses the carrier of the SIM which is installed and automatically installs the appropriate firmware.
The 850 and the 550 do not have any WiFi capabilities.
The CBA850 has several interesting features. First, it is white. Existing CradlePoint routers are all black and somewhat obtrusive if visible in any environment. This unit is designed to be ergonomically pleasing. The second feature is that the CBA850 can operate as a POE device. The unit can be placed anywhere there is a powered ethernet connection as well as good signal strength. It does not have to be mounted in a server room or any other location because of power outlets. And finally, the CBA850 has Out of Band Management (OOBM) capabilities. OOBM allows one to manage a standard router, such as Cisco, through its console port through the CBA850 and NetCloud Management (NCM). OOBM provides secure access to the serial console over LTE. OOBM allows one to make configuration changes remotely as if the engineer were present at the site.
The CBA550 is a low-end Branch Failover unit. It is a POE device and cannot be powered by a power supply. It has only 1 LAN port. This port is 10/100. It is not able to do 'Out of Band Management'. It does not have GPS. The casing is white plastic. It has no routing capabilities. The 550 contains a 150M modem. The 150M modem is a Cat 4 modem and is available for Verizon, ATT and T-Mobile. It is not available for Sprint. the 150M modem is 'First Net Ready' in that it accepts a 'First Net' SIM; it does priority and pre-emption; and it is capable of using Band 14.
The final product added to the Branch Market Segment is the AP22 Access Point. The AP22 is designed to pair with the AER2200. Up to 4 AP22 access points may be powered by the AER2200 using the 4 POE ports. However, if additional Access points are required, CradlePoint has an accessory, part # 170342-000, a power injector which may be used to power additional units. The power supply which is provided in the box has a 30 Watt budget. This means that up to 4 devices totalling power usage of up to 30 Watts can be powered. Each AP22 requires 15 Watts of power. Thus, 2 AP22s can be powered with the default power supply. A 120W budget power supply, part # 170751-000 may be purchased to power 4 AP22 access points.
CradlePoint Mobile Market Segment
The Mobile Market Segment Models are best suited for Transportation, such as trucks, police vehicles, ambulances, etc.; things that require a small footprint, rugged housing, and greater temperature range. The Mobile Market products come in models for Verizon, ATT, Sprint and T-Mobile. The T-Mobile is a Generic model suitable for use in Canada. The IBR1700 model is available with a 600M modem (LTE-Advanced) or a 1200M-B modem (LTE Advanced Pro). None of these modems are able to fallback to any 2G service. ATT and T-Mobile are able to fallback to 3G HSPA+/HSPA service. Verizon and Sprint cannot fallback to 3G EVDO service. These modems have carrier sensing which will detect the SIM installed and automatically download the correct firmware for the carrier.
Probably the most important thing to remember is that no router purchased as part of the Mobile Market Segment will come with antennas or power supply. These must be purchased separately.

The IBR200 uses a new Cat 1 modem designed for slower transmission, 10Mbps down and 5Mbps up. 3 models are available, one for Verizon, 1 for AT&T and T-Mobile (for use in Canada) and 1 for Sprint.
Unlike the other models in the IoT Segment, the IBR200 ships with 2 cellular antennas and 1 WiFi antenna. All of the other models in this segment ship with 2 cellular antennas and 2 WiFi antennas (excludes IBR650C).
The other difference between the IBR200 and the other models in the IoT Market Segment is that the carrier for the IBR200 cannot be changed. The 6x0C and 900 series have carrier sensing which will detect the carrier of the SIM and load the appropriate firmware. There is no Sprint firmware available for the 6x0C series. The 150M modem in the 6x0 series routers has the fastest firmware switch time of any CradlePoint router. Additionally, the 150M router is 'First Net Ready'.
Both the IBR200B and the IBR6x0C series have Passive GPS. The IBR900 has Active GPS.
The 6x0C series uses the Cat 4 Modem (150M). It is capable of a theoretical download speed of 150 Mbps and a theoretical upload speed of 50 Mbps. It has ignition sensing as well as auto carrier-sensing - the ability to sense the carrier of the SIM and configure the router with the correct firmware. However, as in all of the new products, the 6x0C does not support any 2G transmission and it will not support Verizon 3G transmission. It will support ATT and T-Mobile 3G HSPA+ transmission. The 6x0C series is available for Verizon, ATT, T-Mobile, and Canadian carriers. It does not support Sprint.
The IBR900 is an addition into the IoT Market Segment. It is the same hardware as in the Mobile Market Segment. There are 2 differences. The IoT Market segment comes with Cellular Paddle antennas (2), WiFi antennas (2) and a power supply. It comes with NetCloud which is the legacy STANDARD NCM services. An addition to the legacy PRIME NCM services is available. However, it is much more expensive that purchasing the Mobile unit, and separately purchasing the antennas and power supply. The legacy NCM STANDARD package does not come with the Remote Connect Feature. This feature allows you to talk to the router and to get real time data such as who is connected, what tower you are connected to, what band you are connected to, etc. Additionally, it allows one to manage devices which are sitting behind the CradlePoint. So, you are able to manage devices such as cameras, recorders etc. So, if you require the remote connect services, I recommend you purchase one of the Mobile Packages instead of the IoT packages. It is more cost effective.
