The E3000 is part of the Enterprise Series of the Branch Market Segment.
The E3000 unit is designed from the bottom up for 5G transmission. It is suited for fixed branch, healthcare, financial services and retail locations, especially where high security and speed are of utmost importance. It is 5G ready.
In its current state, it is a powerful 4G LTE router. With the addition of a 5G Adapter or a modular 5G modem, it is ready for 5G transmission. The 5G adapters are currently being tested in Australia by Telstra. They are not yet available in the US. The modular 5G modem is not currently available.
The E3000 has the ports, interfaces, and software to make it optimized for 5G. As sold, the E3000 is a 4G LTE router with
4 of the Ethernet ports are PoE, 3 of the GbE ports and 1 2.5 GbE port. These ports are able to power devices up to 90W per port with a total PoE budget of 140W.
The E3000 uses WiFi 6 which is the latest generation of the WiFi spec. It is designed to handle contention more efficiently than previous generations. It's speed becomes more evident when there is contention for service.
The E3000 comes with an embedded 4G Gigabit Modem. An additional modem may be added to the E3000. This modem can be either the existing 4G BF-MC400-1200M-B or the existing 4G MC400-LP6. CradlePoint has plans for an MC500 modem which will fit into the slot for the 2nd modem. The MC500 is not currently available. It will be a Sub-6 modem.
The embedded modem is a 1200M-B modem capable of 1.2Gbs/150Mbs. This modem is currently using the mid Spectrum using 4G protocols. 1.2Gbs is achieved through the use of carrier aggregation, 4x4 MIMO and 256 QAM.
CradlePoint is currently testing the W-2000 (indoor) and W-2005 (outdoor) adapters which function as external/captive modems. The W-200x adapters are PoE powered devices. They require 90W PoE power to function. The WAN port (2.5GbE) previously discussed can provide the 90W of PoE power and can receive data at 2.5 GbE.
The goals of 5G transmission are:
The entire discussion of 5G is confusing. There are discussions of low, mid and high spectrum bands. Television commercials all speak of faster speed. Phone manufactures are marketing 5G telephones. There are discussions of 5G nationwide. What does all of this mean?
CradlePoint has published The 5G for Business Guidebook. But after reading it, the question keeps coming up, but what is the real difference between 4G and 5G? It isn't just a discussion of faster speed.
The answer is 5G NR. 5G NR is 5G New Radio. This is the protocol/standard for the 5G transmission,. This protocol is designed to reduce the latency, i.e., reducing inherent delays in transmission. Other technologies, such as carrier aggregation, 4x4 MIMO and 256 QAM have already been implemented into the 4G Gigabit modems.
There are 3 spectrums discussed for 5G, Low, Mid and High Bands.
Low Spectrum uses spectrum below 1Ghz. Low Spectrum is already in use. For example, Verizon uses the 700 Mhz band and T-Mobile purchased the 600 Mhz band which was previously used for UHF TV signals. These signals can travel great distances with high penetration. However, because of the signal length, it won't be as fast as Mid and High Spectrum bands. It is limited in the amount of data which can be packed onto a signal in a given interval. Because of 5G NR, carrier aggregation MIMO, and increased QAM, it's performance is significantly better that 4G LTE.
Mid Spectrum uses spectrum above 1Ghz and below 6Ghz. This spectrum is known as Sub-6 Ghz. Sub 6 is already in use and in some sense has the best payoff for 5G. Because of the length of the wave, more data can be packed into a given interval. The signal can still travel large distances and the penetration is acceptable. When T-Mobile purchased Sprint. It got a huge spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band. The carriers are using Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) where it shares the spectrum between 4G and 5G transmission. T-Mobile's purchase of Sprint and the UHF frequencies makes it initially positioned well for 5G offerings. The Mid Spectrum is currently being marketed by Verizon and T-Mobile as 5G Nationwide. ATT is marketing the Mid Spectrum as Nationwide 5G.
High Spectrum uses spectrum above 6Ghz. This spectrum is known as mmWave. Signals in this range can't travel far and have problems with penetration. Waves have problem penetrating glass, trees, etc. The Cells are much smaller than the cellular antennas seen along side roads. The smaller cells must be placed very close to each other. They are placed on poles and roofs. Because of the short wave length, more data can be packed into a given interval resulting in superfast speeds. The mmWave spectrum will result in the fastest speeds, but there are significant problems with penetration. Verizon has spent significant effort working in this range. Because of its fast speed, High spectrum transmission is ideally suited for things which require immediate response such as self-driving automobiles or surgery.
It appears that one of the requirements of the 5G modem is that it seamlessly falls back to 4G transmission when 5G is not available. Thus any 5G modem or adapter has to maintain 2 connections, 1 5G and 1 4G.
CradlePoint has announced several options available in the Sub-6 spectrum, including the low Spectrum bands. First, the MC500 modular modem, currently not available, is similar to the MC400 offerings in that it slides into a modem slot on a CradlePoint router. Second, the W-Series adapters have been introduced. These adapters function as an external modem via an Ethernet Cable to a compatible CradlePoint router. The W-200x adapters may be used with any router with sufficient performance. The E3000 is the ideal router for the W-Series in that the Adapter can connect to the 2.5Gbs port via Ethernet cable for the fastest performance. The W-Adapters exist and are currently being tested in Australia by Telstra.
CradlePoint has announced the W-4005 adapter which handles the mmWave Spectrum. This unit is designed for outdoor usage and functions as an external modem. Again, the ideal CradlePoint router is the E3000 as it connects via a 2.5 Gbs port. The W-4005 is currently not available. The W-4005 adapter may be used with any router with sufficient performance.
The E3000 is suitable for Private LTE. Private LTE is an alternative for WiFi where WiFi is too congested or where the area is too large. Private LTE provides LTE service equivalent to Public LTE, even where Public LTE is not available. Use cases for Private LTE include airports, hospitals and large warehouses.
The E3000 is sold as a package complete with the router and NetCloud Essentials, or NetCloud Essentials+NetCloud Advanced. NetCloud includes remote management, NetCloud OS, 24x7 CradlePoint support, NetCloud Perimeter (SD-WAN), limited lifetime warranty, and NetCloud API and SDK.
If the router is purchased with just the Essentials Package, NCM Advanced may be purchased as an add-on. NCM Advanced includes:
NCM Essentials, Advanced and Bundled Essentials + Advanced are purchased as a subscription on an endpoint basis. They are available in 1, 3 or 5 year subscriptions.
The E3000 is slightly larger than the less expensive E300. It is 6.3 x 12.6 x 1.7 inches vs 5.3 x 10.6 x 1.7 inches. It also weighs more than the E300. The E3000 weighs 4 lb 6 oz vs 1 lb 13 oz. The E3000 has a metal casing and POE. Each of these add significant weight to the unit.
The E3000 also has the same LED light as on the E300. The white lights along the base of the router and the CradlePoint logo on the top face of the device light up when the device is connected to a registered NCM account.
CradlePoint has introduced its VERIFY app which is a mobile application that simplifies setting up your CradlePoint endpoint and getting it online quickly. VERIFY is available from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. It makes setting up any CradlePoint a 1-2-3 process, walking you through all of the steps including testing and speedtests.
The E3000 is a super powerful Enterprise Mobile Router. It is built from the bottom-up with high performance components. It is designed for 5G communications. The MC500, a modular 5G modem, is able to fit into the 2nd modem slot on the unit. The MC500 is expected to be released sometime in 2021. The MC500 provides for Sub-6 5G transmission. The 5G adapters can be used for 5G mmWave communication and is designed to feed into a 2.5 Gbs port. It is a powerful unit with a viable path for 5G communications.
