Overview
The AP22 is the first stand-alone access point from CradlePoint. It was introduced along with the Solutions Packages. It is designed to work with the any of the AER Branch Routers, especially, the AER2200 and the E3000. Both of these units have 4 POE ports. It is designed to extend the WiFi range for any small to mid-sized offices.
The AP22 has 3 radios, 2 of which are designed for client use. It handles 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz bands. The 3rd is designed for Wireless Intrusion Protection. This has not been implemented as of yet, but it is currently being worked on. The recommendation is to set the SSIDs and passwords up identically for both bands. The default configuration of the AP22 is 'WiFi Band Steering'. When a 5 Ghz device attempts to attach to the SSID, the router will steer it to the 5 Ghz band, leaving the 2.4 Ghz band to handle any legacy devices which can only connect to the 2.4 Ghz band.
It is also recommended to use the same SSID and password on all AP22's and any WiFi provided by a router. This will provide for seamless roaming across a facility.
One of the nice features with the AP22 is that it supports seamless roaming. Walking from one end of the office to another provides for seamless transition from 1 access point to another access point.
The AP22 is a POE device. It is powered via an Ethernet Interface. 4 of the ports on the AER2200 and on the E3000 are POE ports. Thus, plugging the AP22 into one of these ports provides power for the unit. The AER2200 has a power budget of 30 Watts with the standard power supply. Each AP22 requires 15 watts of power. Thus you can attach 2 AP22's with the standard power supply. If you need to attach more than the 2 AP22's, then you can purchase an extended power supply, part # 170751-000, which will supply 120 Watts of POE power. Thus the AER2200 is capable of running 4 AP22's using the 4 POE ports. A POE Injector can also be used to power the AP22. The E3000 as a power budget of 140W. Thus the E3000 is capable of 4unning 4 AP22's using the 4 POE ports using the standard power supply.
All of the antennas are internal to the AP22. No antennas are required or available.
